Matsuken Samba!

I signed up for Blogspot today following in the footsteps of my friends Y and R. Hi, guys! I don't have much to write about, but while I'm here, let me ramble about my new love for MATSUKEN SAMBA!

While in Tokyo, my sister and I caught a special TV feature about the Matsuken Samba craze that hit last year, and damn, it's kinda hypnotic. Picture this: a 51-year old actor, famous for playing the serious, macho lead role in a popular samurai TV drama, dons a samurai wig and glittery gold kimono, gets onstage in front of a full stadium of fans, and starts wiggling his hips and waving his arms flamboyantly to the time of a Latin beat, flanked by similarly wigged-and-sequined samurais and bejeweled geishas.

To get the full kitch effect, you have to visit the website and click on the Real or WMP links for video footage.

OMG!!! This is just tooooo hilarious! I sure do you miss you, Tracey! I am sitting here bopping in my chair as I write this...and trying not to be too noisey because I'm the only one up at 12:11 a.m. - I think I found a new sound to blast in the minivan as I cruise down the streets of York...won't that turn some heads!

Hey T - I finally had a chance to check out the website. Rachel was right, this was too funny!! A friend from Japan will be in town this weekend, I'll have to see if she knows of them and get her take on it since she lives there.

I asked my friend about Matsuken Samba and she just laughed. She said it was weird to hear about it all the way out here. I honestly didn't think she'd know about it, but she said when something's big in Japan, there's no escaping it until it burns itself out.

It was on TV three nights out of the six we spent there, and two or three of those nights we didn't even watch TV. There were even little Matsuken keychains, which of course I now regret not buying :-)
