Smokey

This is Smokey, F's high school vehicle. Once upon a time, F parked Smokey here in the woods and went off to join the Navy. Some twenty years later, we returned to move Smokey to a new spot and found it like this. Moss everywhere, the front windshield and hood broken by a fallen branch, slugs taking up residence in the door jamb.
We've been spending a fair amount of time up on the reservation property (where Smokey was parked) lately. Someone stole F's mom's mailbox... post and all... and it had to be replaced. We put three bags of concrete in with the post this time, so good luck to any would-be post thieves. Of course, F's mom says that kids will probably just blow up the new mailbox with M-80's on the Fourth of July anyway thanks to Boom City, the annual fireworks stand extravaganza put on by the local Indian tribe.
Actually, we're hoping to visit Boom City ourselves pretty soon in anticipation of the holiday. But things here are a mess at the moment... F's brother and his family will be coming to stay with us for 10 days in a couple of weeks, and we're going crazy trying to make the place presentable. Ack!

This post of yours is kind of ironic. Today in the mail came a letter from The Township. They said we have to get rid of our three parked cars within five days! How ridiculous! I called and whined to them, and we have 30 days to get rid of our cars... We've been wanting to sell them, but haven't really had the money or time to make some minor improvements to each that would make them more desirable to potential buyers. I guess this will be our July project. Townships!!!
Oh yeah... I almost forgot what I wanted to originally say:
"On top of Old Smokey... All covered with moss... bring out the salt shaker...'cuz slugs are the boss!"
lol, R!
wow...Smokey had been abandoned for quite some time! is F planning to restore it?
Smokey reminds me of a "surf" wagon - you know, like on Gidget. not quite the same, but it seems like it would be perfect for that time frame and the guys would all load their surfboards in the back...but i digress.
and what a story about F's mom's mailbox getting stolen. who would want to do that? really! =/
i take it you're not necessarily excited about the visitors?!?!?
LOL, R! And you should see the slugs up there... they're HUGE!
Sorry to hear about your cars and the Township :-( I know we have city laws about having too many cars around, but they aren't enforced up on the reservation.
Y, I can see what you mean about Smokey looking like a surf wagon! And I had the same reaction when F's mom called about it... who on earth is so desperate for a mailbox that they would steal one? I guess it could have been vandals, but you'd think a vandal would just pull it out of the ground and leave it there :-/ Why haul a mailbox around, after all...
As for the visitors... we're really excited to meet them, and all! But the prospect of having three strangers move into the house for over a week is kind of stressing me out.
I'm sure I'll get over it once they're here...
Awwww, I really miss Gidget!!! I love that show!! I could sit all day Saturday watching it!
Smokey is fabulous! It looks magical with all the moss and plants growing all over it. Were you delighted seeing it like that? Hah, 20 years sitting there - that's awesome!
It *was* fun to find Smokey like that-- although we've had vehicles go that way in a matter of a couple of years up here! The inside was a miniature time capsule with rusted badges, an old bottle of some veterinary chemical, and empty Strawberry Fanta cans strewn about. And old pairs of gym socks (yecch!) :-)
